I took a trip into town today to have a look at some hotel on Long Street. It is quite a while since I was in the center of town and I must say that Long Street is looking pretty good. This vibey street is especially popular with the weekend evening crowd with its many nightclubs and bars. Where better for the young and adventurous to stay, than in a place where they can walk everywhere and eat cheaply.
My favourite of the hotels I saw was the plush and playful Grand Daddy. Recently purchased by the owners of the very reasonably priced Daddy Longlegs (one up from a backpackers, but with soul and personality), The Grand Daddy is a 4 star boutique hotel with a difference.
The rooms are all different sizes and shapes with varying views of the city and Table Mountain, but common to all of them are trendy decor and all the extra touches you would expect from a 4 star hotel. Extra touches are things like Cape Town’s oldest working elevator, ever changing digital art and a glitzy white bar, fit for Elton John.
Leaving the best for last however is the absolute piece de resistance….the rooftop trailor park. Sound horrendous? It isn’t. It is one of the most innovative ideas I have seen in a long time. There are 7 imported old style silver bubble caravans, all decorated in wild designs, with their own private en-suite shower and toilet. So there you are, practically at the top of the world, with only Table Mountain above you, in a retro and utterly unique hotel room. And all at a reasonable price of under R1000 for the trailor or room per night.
Best of all?? I have already booked to stay there with the husband for a second honeymoon. I am choosing the “bordello room” for that wedding night touch!!!!
